How the World Works Inquiry - Wk 2

Exploring the need for shelter and how and why natural factors (changes in weather) affect the lives of humans and animals.

Throughout Play and Inquiry Learning time this week some students constructed shelters for various creatures. Students used a variety of recycled and craft materials for their constructions. Some students designed their shelters before proceeding to construct them. Students worked independently or with others on their shelters. During reflection time students shared what kind of shelter they made, who it is for and how it protects its occupant from danger/weather conditions.

In this week’s Integrated Inquiry Workshop students reflected on the discussion, from the previous week, of the need for food and water to keep us healthy. They were then introduced to another basic need - shelter. Students discussed the need for shelter including animal habitats. They explored the purpose of various shelters and why they were built the way they were. Students discussed how and why natural factors such as changes in weather, night and day affect all living creatures and impact on their shelters. Non-fiction texts were shared that contained information about various shelters for humans and animals. Students then had the opportunity to design a shelter for a particular creature and with support, write a written description about who the shelter is for and how it protects its occupants from particular natural factors.
