Reducing Waste


Throughout Play and Inquiry Learning this week, some students continued and/or joined in, with making paper! As the paper dried students decided to open a Recycled Paper Shop. For this shop they made gift tags, envelopes, notepaper and cards all from the paper they recycled.

In this week's integrated Inquiry workshop students conducted an audit of the rubbish found in the school. In groups students were provided with a clipboard with a map of the school and paper for recording their findings. They worked together to collect the rubbish found in their designated area of the school. They counted how many pieces of rubbish in total and sorted it into what can be recycled, can be reused and what is waste.Their findings determined the rubbish 'hotspot' of the school. Whilst the Mini Oval and in front of the library and art room contained the most amount of rubbish in the school, the area with the least amount of recyclable rubbish was the Junior Adventure Playground.... where we eat our lunch! Whoops! Discussing the reasons for certain areas having a certain amount and type of rubbish the students suggested that the rubbish in their area blew in from elsewhere in the school rather than being left there by them! Students discussed ways to minimise waste both at school and home.

Allegra from Prep Luisa's grade brought in a fantastic recycled city that she made at home. The city had L.E.D. street lights made out of toothbrushes, an old egg flip was a solar cell, there was a green house on the roof, a rain water tank and many other special features made from used materials. Well done Allegra, your city was fantastic and inspiring!
