This week during Play and Inquiry Learning time some students began paper making! By following a poster displaying the procedure for paper making students began by shredding up scrap paper from their classroom collections. After a tub was full of paper they added hot water to the tub and let the paper soak for 15mins. Next students used a mixer to turn the paper into pulp or 'paper porridge!' Next students inserted a frame into the tub and transferred their new paper onto a board for drying.
In this week's integrated inquiry workshop students were introduced to the terms: Reduce : Use less of; Reuse: Use again without changing; Recycle: Use again by changing. In small groups students sorted pictures into columns on a poster of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. They discussed posters and the practices of Reducing, Reusing and Recycling.
Students passed around various products and discussed if the product can or has been recycled and how they know.
They listened to information texts on the 3Rs that discussed sources of some materials used in everyday products; properties of some common materials that influence their re-use and/or recycling; procedures for waste avoidance and minimisation; and systems for managing and recycling waste.
It is great to see so many students' lunchboxes full of recyclable materials and/or reusable containers!
